BAMANA STYLE , BOLI (BULL) FIGURES 2, Mali

These figures are assembled from diverse organic materials over a wooden core. They are thought to symbolize the universe and to harness spiritual power. Called Boli, they are placed on altars. The most common form is this "bull" shape but Boli may take other shapes as well.

Old Bamana Boli figures are rare. Despite their appearance, our figures show no evidence of age or use and were probably made to be sold.
