BAULE, Pounders, Ivory Coast

These Baule pounders been vetted as being authentic, with 1-3 showing significant signs of use and age.

The Baule are one of the Akan peoples. They moved west to the Ivory Coast more than 200 years ago and adopted sculptural and masking traditions from their neighbors, the Guro, Senufo and Yaure peoples.

The Baule and other peoples wear robes known as "boubous". To keep the fabric looking lusterous wax is impregnated into the fibers using these pounders. Working in unison, two workers rhythmically pound the day away.

We recommend Baule: African Art Western Eyes by Susan M. Vogel (Yale).
