Masks like these were used in instruction and initiation ceremonies into the five progressive levels of Bwami, the association that Lega men rise through with learning and deeds. Most have raffia beards. The measurement is the height of the mask. The larger masks are face masks, the smaller ones are called Lukwakongo and were worn on the arm, carried in the hand, attached to a hat or grouped with similar masks.
These Lega masks show no evidence of age or use and were probably made to be sold.
