Masks like these were used in instruction and initiation ceremonies into the five progressive levels of Bwami, the Lega men's association.

For the photographs the eye slots were blocked with black cloth to simulate how the mask would appear when worn or hung on a wall. Masks 53 and 58 contain a second measurement, which is the height with raffia.
