MOSSI STYLE SUKOMSE MASKS, Burkina Faso

These Ouagadougou or Southern style crest masks represent totems important to various lineages descended from the original farming populations. They are generally worn on top of the head with heavy conical fiber costumes that fall to the ground.

We recommend Land of the Flying Masks: Art and Culture in Burkina Faso (Prestel) by Christopher Roy and Thomas Wheelock.
