NUPE
Stool 29

Most Nupe are Muslim and their art is therefore abstract, with only some stylized animals in relief on their doors and some pots. The stools come in many forms yet are all carved from single blocks of wood. All share a richly carved top surface.

This stool has nine original legs (plus one replaced), four of which have traces of white paint. The stool stands well, but the top is not level at the present and not all of the legs reach the floor. This was not a problem on a dirt floor. There is visible wear on the top surface, especially on the front and back edges.
