SANGO, RELIQUARY FIGURES, Gabon

These figures, smaller and less familiar than Bakota and Mahongwe religuary guardians, were usually placed in basketry containers holding relics of important clan ancestors. Sheathed in metal (brass or copper), the figures are abstracted into a diamond shape below the neck. Those with raffia are in basketry containers (see detail below) and include a full figure similar to the small detail above. The baskets also include small animal skulls, horns and shells. Sango 3 is mounted on an iron gong.
Old Sango guardians are very rare. Despite their appearance, these Sango figures show little evidence of age or use and were probably made to be sold.
