Despite their appearance these figures were probably made to be sold. We have listed them also as Asante because most people think of them as coming from the better known people.
Seated female figures were found in shrines or as part of popular drum ensembles among the Fante known as Ntan or Ompe. These sculpted maternity figures are prominent parts of the drum stand where large drums leaning on their sides are supported on elevated platforms with sculptures attached to them such as these female figures.
