BAULE STYLE Spoons, Ivory Coast

Although they could be mounted, we photographed them by hanging them on a wall with a thin fish line tied just below the head.

The Baule are one of the Akan peoples. They moved west to the Ivory Coast more than 200 years ago and adopted sculptural and masking traditions from their neighbors, the Guro, Senufo and Yaure peoples. Intricately carved spoons were prestige objects for the Baule.

We recommend Baule: African Art Western Eyes by Susan M. Vogel
