Chameleon Headdress 3
26.5" long x 8" high
$600
SOLD
Despite its appearance and patina, this wonderful headdress, worn horizontally, shows no evidence of age or use and was probably made to be sold.
The chameleon is abundantly represented in the art of Burkina Faso peoples (Bwa, Bobo, Lobi and Nuna). It is considered one of the original primordial creatures created by God. Chameleons are considered magical and powerful because of their ability to change color when aroused or frightened. Its deliberate manner of walking also makes it an animal to fear.
Since the head is lower than the body, this headdress stands awkwardly on a flat surface and could be displayed best with the head over an edge or with a platform under the legs.
