DOGON FIGURE 37, MALI
Photographs © Tim Hamill
DOGON, FIGURE 37, 13", $200, SOLD, Mali
Usually representing spirits, ancestors or the primordial couple, figures
such as these were placed in shrines and treated with great respect. Through
a wide range of style, scale, belief and function the figures depicted share
a timeless, serene quality necessary to the continuity of Dogon society.
Note: This piece, although carved by a Dogon carver in the traditional
style, shows no signs of age or use and was probably made for sale.
