CUICA DRUM 1, $150, SOLD, Africa

Drums are among the most important art forms in Africa, used both as a musical instrument and as a work of sculpture significant in many ceremonial functions, including dance, rituals, story-telling and communication of messages.

The head on this drum is intact, but with several holes. There is a stick attached to the head that can be held, touched, etc. from the bottom. Not playable traditionally but we were told strange animal sounds could be made by stroking the stick in a certain way. The name cuica is from S. America.
