ETHIOPIAN FLAT HEADREST 57
Photographs © Tim Hamill
ETHIOPIAN, FLAT HEADREST 57, 7", $200, SOLD, Ethiopia
In many African cultures, small wooden "pillows" are
used to support the head during sleep and in some instances to preserve
a hairstyle. In Ethiopia, the headrests come in several forms and relate
to other intricate, but abstract works. This group I refer to as "Flat".
The back view (shown) of each is similar to the front view. Many still have
a protruding bump, pierced for a cord.
