FULANI / KIRDI, MODESTY APRON 6, 21", $250, West Africa, SOLD
The Fulani, many of whom are nomadic, live in an area from Mali in the west to Cameroon in the east. Modesty aprons, cache-sex jewelry, denote age, status and social condition. They were worn to attract attention and protect against evil. The two with leatherwork relate to both Kirdi beaded aprons and Tuareg leatherwork.
The necklaces show an inventive combination of beads, chain metalwork, small cast pieces and British West African coins.
