DAN GAMEBOARD (MANKALA) 1, Liberia
Photographs © Tim Hamill
DAN GAMEBOARDS (MANKALA) 1, 38.5", $500, SOLD, Liberia
Despite its appearance, this gameboard was probably made to be sold.
Dan gameboards range from everyday objects with monumental, simple forms
to ornate pieces bringing status to the owner. Like their spoons and other
objects, Dan gameboards usually have a head as part of the carving. They
all show the creativity and power Africans put into functional objects.
