IJO Headdress 17
18.5" high x 7.25" wide x 9" deep
$800
This headdress has been vetted as authentic. It has some old stable cracks (one on the back has iron staples) but the front of the headdress and the basketry are in very good condition. It comes on a custom stand.
The horizontal headdresses worn by the Ijo (or Ijaw) people are some
of the rarest in Africa. They are used duriung water-spirit festivals prior
to the rainy season and often depict aspects of marine life: fish, aquatic
fantasy creatures and occasionally boats.
