KIRDI, BEADED APRONS, Northern Cameroon

Kirdi beaded aprons, cache-sex jewelry called "pikuran", denote age, status and social condition. They were worn to attract attention and protect against evil.

Length is longest length/width of beadwork, without string.

Our examples show a wide range of colorful, abstact patterns. Individual condition reports are on each page. On several the tie strings are short, but intact. All have been photographed with the cowries facing forward. The back sides are always hollowed out to make the shell stringable. (see detail on apron 26).
