Despite their appearance, the masks below show no evidence of use or age and were probably made to be sold.
Utilized in the context of a boy's initiation ceremony, masks like these were controlled by the Nsembu divination society. The Kumu are neighbors of the Lega, Ituri, Mbaka, Lengola and other peoples who make similar masks. Those of the Kumu are notable for their dramatic, more geometrically abstract style.
The measurements are the height of the mask, then the height of the mask plus raffia. All are wired for hanging.
