Most Luba art relates to kings and important chiefs, who defined their power by the display of prestige objects during important ceremonies. Elegant staffs of office were among the most important.
Despite its beautiful carving, traditional form and appearance, this staff exhibits little use or age and was probably made to be sold. It has a crack on the front (now stable). The wood part is 13" high, the whole staff with the iron rod is 49" high.
