The Asmats' inventive but elegant sense of abstract design is exhibited beautifully in this ladle. The intensity of the ochre design contrasts effectively with the lighter wood. The simple, repeated curvelinear shapes, typical of Asmat work, are very successful in competing with the enigmatic figure on the handle.
