Deble, carved figures whose legs merged into solid cylindrical
bases were designed to be used as percussion instruments. Held by their
arms, the heavy figures were pounded against the ground to provide a rythmic
beat for Senufo dancers.
In addition to extensive insect damage, the arms and the "pounder"
base have been lost and a metal patch encircles the waist. Yet in spite
of its ravaged condition, we think the piece retains an undeniable elegance.
