This stool shows signs of age and use. There is obvious and extensive damage but what remains is stable. I find the contrast between the smooth, original surface and rough irregular damage interesting, as if nature is in conflict with a man-made object. There is a repaired section on the bottom surface underneath the heavily cracked edge. The legs are intact despite visible damage on the outside surfaces.
These wonderfully simple sculptural forms are carved from a single block of wood by the Senufo people of Ivory Coast.
