Deble, carved figures whose legs merged into solid cylindrical bases were designed to be used as percussion instruments. Held by their arms, the heavy figures were pounded against the ground to provide a rythmic beat for Senufo dancers.

This figure has lost its "pounder" base. Furthermore, the style of the face shares formal characteristics with the carving typical of the Baule people, neighbors of the Senufo.
