AFO, HOE CURRENCY, Iron, Northern Nigeria

These massive (5.5 -10 lbs.) iron forms were used by the Afo people of Northern Nigeria. They are the largest of the hoe-shaped currencies and were not used as tools. The irregularities and damage are probably the result of the casting, low quality iron or the corrosion and rust of long storage. They might have been modeled after European heraldic shields.
