AFO, HOE CURRENCY ARCHIVES, Iron, Northern Nigeria
These massive (5.5 -10 lbs.) iron forms were used by the Afo people of Northern Nigeria. They are the largest of the hoe-shaped currencies and were not used as tools. The irregularities and damage are probably the result of the casting, low quality iron or the corrosion and rust of long storage.
