In spite of its patina, this figure shows no real evidence of age or use and was probably made to be sold.
Called Bieri, these figures were guardians of the enshrined relics of important ancestors. Sitting on top of the containers, they were also consulted for aid and protection. They are notable for their child-like proportions contrasted with a muscular, poised vigilance.
Note the cracks: One down the right side of the head, one near the middle of the chest, and one from the chest to the bottom of the stomach on the right side. There are also several insect holes (old and stable) mostly on the back side of the figure. The eyes are metal tacks. (See large images below).
