FANG STYLE RELIQUARY HEADS, Gabon
Heads like these, called Bieri like the figures used the same way, were guardians of the enshrined relics of important ancestors. Sitting on top of the containers, they were also consulted for aid and protection. The heads may represent an earlier form that later came to include full figures. Some have metal around the eyes.
Despite their appearance these heads show no evidence of age or use and were probably made to be sold.
