NGONI STYLE
HEADRESTS
Malawi
These headrests were probably made to be sold.
Numbers 1-6, similar in style, are embellished with metal inserts that are filed flush with the surface. Numbers 7 -8, slightly different, may not be Ngoni.
In many African cultures, carved wooden "pillows" are used to support the head during sleep and in some instances to preserve a hairstyle.
