IGBO, COUPLES, Nigeria

Usually representing spirits, ancestors or the primordial couple, figures like thesewere placed in shrines and treated with great respect. Traditionally, most of the couples are two freestanding figures, conceived as a unit, and posed frontally, symmetrically, in formal postures and of equal size.

Despite its appearance and patina, this Igbo pair shows no evidence of age or use and was probably made to be sold.
